2. Before Explaining the Theory
Before beginning the explanation of reality proposed by Original Reality Theory, it is necessary to examine the conditions under which any explanation can be constructed and communicated.
The theory will necessarily be presented through language, concepts, abstractions, representations, formulas, and other codes. Before using these tools to explain reality, this stage therefore investigates how perception, interpretation, representation, and communication participate in constructing and conveying an explanation.
The plan published below presents the initial structure of this work.
2.1 Signs, Representation, and Code
The letter “A” is a graphic sign within a particular writing system. Its form can be recognized and used according to the conventions of that system.
The word “tree” is a linguistic sign. It can be used to represent a tree, but the word “tree” is not the tree. The sign is not what it represents.
Different languages and writing systems use different forms of encoding. Not all languages have writing, and not all writing systems are alphabetic.
Letters, words, numbers, images, diagrams, and other signs can participate in systems of representation. The conventions of each system allow these signs to be used and related.
Representation and what is represented are not the same thing. Distinguishing reality, representation, and code is necessary before examining how a message is produced, transmitted, and interpreted.
